In the last 20 years, a network of specialised festivals on documentary film has been developed around the globe. From a model of film showcase, the festivals shifted to multi‐level events in which the convergence of industry sections with distribution networks and documentarists offered a new arena for the production of creative documentary films. In this frame, the production workshops, markets and pitching forums proved to have a huge influence (both in terms of style and theme) on the films that were successfully produced and distributed through the circuit. In this paper we will give a general overview on how some institutions and economic practices embedded in the festival circuit shaped the content and aesthetics of the films, proving a feedback of the distribution network with the documentarists, in a process of promotion of co‐production practices in the search for international audiences and universal topics in which the financing of MEDIA programme from EU had a capital role.
